A summary statement outlines the significant gaps in the employee’s performance that he or she should focus on in order to become an even stronger performer during the next performance period. Identify these and make sure that you and the employee agree on them. If the employee disagrees about what you believe are weak areas, recognize that you are ultimately responsible for the team’s results.
