This is generally considered polite. It’s not a mandate, but people will think you have a level of manners if you at least acknowledge the person who introduced you. If you’re intellectually quick and can come up with a humorous self-effacing remark (such as, “With all those great words, I was wondering if someone was going to speak before me!”), you will help your audience feel at ease— and you will as well.
