Dahl of Aalborg University and Olav Sorenson of Yale University studied the impact that ‘regional embeddedness’ – how well you know your local area – has on the success of entrepreneurial start-ups. Analysing data on more than 13,000 Danish start-up businesses, Dahl and Sorenson were able to demonstrate that ‘regional embeddedness’ gives greater benefit to entrepreneurs than prior industry knowledge – a well-known source of competitive advantage.
