What you need to know

In 1872, the great Charles Darwin wrote that ‘the free expression by outward signs of an emotion intensifies it’. In other words, if we look happy and demonstrate it through smiling, we will in turn feel happier. It took nearly 100 years for the idea to gain much attention from psychologists, but since then a great deal of research has built up to show that – even subconsciously – how we appear outwardly in terms of our emotions has an impact on how we think and feel.
