Chapter 19
Set Theory
Set theory is, not surprisingly, the study of sets — that is, collections of things. Every member of a set is called an element of that set; for example, the set {1, 4, 5} has three elements. In this chapter, you solve problems that strengthen your skills in basic set theory.
The Problems You’ll Work On
The problems in this chapter focus on the following skills:
Performing the operations of union, intersection, and relative complement on sets
Working with sets of numbers such as even and odd numbers, positive and negative numbers, and so forth
Finding the complement of a set using the set of integers as the universal set
Solving problems using Venn diagrams
What to Watch Out For
Here is a list of the basic operations and other concepts you’ll need to solve the problems in this chapter:
The union () of two sets includes every element that’s in either set.
