Brazilian Gustavo Lins
was originally destined
to be an architect. He
actually graduated as
one in his native country
in 1989 before moving
to Barcelona to study
for his master’s degree
at the Polytechnic
University of Catalonia.
The following year,
he began to work as a
freelance patternmaker
for such exclusive
names as Jean-Charles
de Castelbajac, Jean
Paul Gaultier, Louis
Vuitton, and John
Galliano until 2003,
when he created his own
label, Gustavolins. His
designs still continue to
involve an architectural
thought process. In fact,
his logo is an inverted
T-square, which says a
lot about his ideology.
It symbolizes balanced
construction while
rejecting accepted codes,
and re ects the duality
between fragility and
strength that converge
in the delicate but well-
structured silhouettes
he constructs.
