Painting the sky

Natural textures and objects are among the hardest to create in Photoshop. But taken in short steps, what seems like an impossible job can easily be broken down into a series of short, manageable tasks.

We’ll start with drawing clouds. This is one of the few texture occasions where we won’t begin with the Clouds filter – as we’ve seen, this otherwise useful filter is awful at creating realistic clouds.

1 Begin with a new layer, filled with black. This is necessary, since the filters we’ll use next only work with a background.
