The first time many people heard of the brutal murder of British Army soldier Lee Rigby by two Islamic extremists in May 2013 was via Twitter. Many more people then watched a shaky video of one of the suspected killers covered in blood and holding a meat cleaver.

The video was shot on a phone. Another man, out shopping, live-Tweeted the killing. Professional journalists soon descended on the scene, but their role was to fill in the blanks rather than document the event.
