THE DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a system for identifying a device connected to the internet. It translates numerical IP addresses into easily memorized domain names.

In the early days, there were only a few hosts (computers) connected to the internet. Each had a numerical address, listed in a central text file maintained by Stanford Research Institute. Everyone on the network had to copy the host.txt file daily to get the latest version. As more networks joined the internet, this became impractical.
