THE EMOTICON

Since the beginning of written communication, symbols have been used to convey emotions. Early examples, used by telegraph operators, include ‘73’ meaning ‘best regards’ and ‘88’ meaning ‘love and kisses’. On the Web the equivalent is an emoticon, a visual representation of a facial expression using punctuation marks, numbers and letters ;-)
