Here is the review by Peter Tran:
“Yay! I just passed Microsoft Exam 70-433 with a little help from the book MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-433): Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 – Database Development. I’ll first cover the good part about this book followed by the bad part. The good part is this book does cover all the materials from the exam. Some parts of the material are covered in better details than other. The chapters are organized very similar to the requirements posted by Microsoft. Each chapter covers specific lesson plans with time estimate on how long it will take to review and study. There is a chapter review and suggested practice section which was helpful. I would have given up on this book if it weren’t for my Safari Books Online (SBO) membership. SBO has an excellent search feature that allowed me to find the sections I needed to study. Here is the bad: I can’t fully credit this book with helping me pass. There were a lot of technical mistakes. The chapters did not have a good flow. Some were better written than others, which is typical when you have several authors. The worse part is the practice exam included with the book. If you have a Safari Books Online account, you can get the book and all the CD material of the “Extras” tab. MeasureUp created the practice tests. I was really disappointed with some of the incorrect answers. My warning is to you is to make sure you set aside time to actually very the question and answers in the practice tests. I would use this book as a supplement to other materials rather than the sole study guide. There are a few great online resources. The books by Itzik Ben-Gan are in fact better materials to study.”

I’ve read this book completely through twice, and studied many sections of it five times. I learned a lot about SS8, but the more familiar I get with it, the less likely I am to rely on it for the test. There’s contradictions between the book and the practice test. There’s outright inaccuracies in both, and from what I’m reading online, neither the book nor the practice test is adequate. The book is much to be preferred over the practice tests. It’s thorough in what it covers but (intentionally?) leaves out large chunks regarding XML, promises to thoroughly cover finding sequence gaps but then leaves much to be desired, and doesn’t mind publishing a few syntax errors and typos.

When I take the test, I guess I’ll find out how well it covered powershell, Service Broker and Full-Text indexes.
