It is extremely rare to see any expert—let alone a designer—explicitly tell you when not to use their “best practices.” But in real life, there is no such thing as a best practice. Every practice is contextual. Used in the wrong situation, every tool can become extremely harmful.
You can't just follow a path that somebody laid out in a book. You, and your project, are unique. You must carefully select the tools you're going to use, test them out, and discard them if they don't produce results. As you go, you are building your own personal path to what works.
