The aim of Go, their new language, was to fill the same niche today that C fit into in the ’80s. It is a low-level language for multiprocessor development.

Go is meant for use with systems programming, and less for general-purpose applications. It's targeting the same audience as C, but will be designed to leverage today's hardware & operating systems.
