Put simply (which is somewhat disingenuous because there is actually nothing too simple about mods), a mod can add an enormous range of features, functionality, and gameplay elements. Some mods change the landscape; others add different animals or change character animations. Some add a mapping system whereas others change the way the inventory works, or dot the landscape with hosts of new buildings and ruins. The most extensive add entire new items, systems, and interactions to the game—from powerful replacements for redstone to the implementation of industrial and nuclear ages.
