Sometimes developing others means telling them they've messed up, their performance isn't good enough, or it isn't as good as they think it is. That's tough. But getting it right can turn a problem into an opportunity. The way to do that is to make sure that when you challenge them, you do it in a supportive and positive way. That can be difficult, particularly if their underperformance might reflect on you, but you have to take your own emotions out of the equation. It's hard but not impossible.
