Skills for verbal communications

Conversations form the basis of most verbal communications, including informal discussions, meetings and the various types of interview. William O’Brien (quoted in Senge et al., 1994) suggests that improved conversation is one of four attributes required by winning companies of the twenty-first century, while Senge et al. say that ‘most of what passes for conversation in contemporary society is more like a ping-pong game than true talking and thinking together’.

Much of our communication is verbal. While you may have learned to talk decades ago, you can certainly benefit from an understanding of how to effectively talk and listen. Both are necessary to gain a shared understanding, which is a primary goal of communication.
