A byte is 8 bits long so there are 28 or 256 possible values

The figure 28 is confusing me, does this mean 2^8 , and therefore does the 27 and the 27-1 for Byte in the table above refer to 2^7 and 2^7-1 inclusive, with the 8th bit (or 1st when reading from the left) being the signed bit?
