Although design has long recognized the emotional dimension of products, theory has been a fairly recent development. Patrick Jordan, in Designing Pleasurable Products (CRC Press, 2002), was one of the first to consider it at length. Based loosely on anthropologist Lionel Tiger’s work on pleasure as a biological mechanism for survival, Jordan identifies four types of pleasure that factor into product design.
