On September 2, 2002, the Integration and System Test team attended a Software Cafeteria all-hands meeting. During a discussion of future product road maps, Kate Hernandez, the SpeedyWriter product manager, announced that a major new effort to deliver release 3.1, code-named Sumatra, would commence in a few weeks. Sumatra, she explained, would deliver some incremental improvements in table, file import, and header/footer functionality, but it would also include as its signature new feature an optional document management subsystem (DMS).
