To understand why conflict arises, and to resolve it, it is useful to understand what we need as human beings to feel satisfied that we have resolved a conflict acceptably. Here Susan H. Shearhouse introduces the concept of the "satisfaction triangle": Substance-Fairness-Emotion. Too often when trying to resolve a dispute, we concentrate on the substance of the argument without giving equal weight to our need for perceived fairness and to the impact of our emotions on the situation.
