Integrated optics offers several techniques79 for launching an optical wave in a thin film or an interface to probe its (structure-related) optical properties. In this section some of these methods are discussed with reference to linear and nonlinear optical behavior. Nonlinear optics at the interface is relatively new; consequently, its application as a probe to study the polymer interface is not as fully realized compared to developments in the study of small-molecule monolayers and their interfacial behavior.
