monetizing relationships that had once been based on a sense of mutual caring and obligation between people, and between people and the land.
This seems very simplistic and romanticized. Aren't most civilizations ruled by the most powerful, who then pass along their power, wealth, and influence to their children? Are you telling me the "noble savage" story? That the rice-paddy workers were happily and blissfully one with their surroundings? I call B.S. I bet the leaders enjoyed a much better life than others...but maybe I am projecting western civilization elsewhere.
