I have observed an inherent mindset in many engineers: everything can be automated through technology and process. This viewpoint, so useful to software development, manifests all of the time in my internal education consulting. The thinking goes like this: If we can just create a big system with a comprehensive set of learning resources, then we will not have to take any responsibility for the development of our employees. I agree that some things can be streamlined and automated, but effective managers will never be off the hook for paying attention to their employees’ development.
