Gary Hamel wrote The Future of Management in 1997. In this book, Hamel challenges leaders of modern organizations to give up some of their traditional powers; to offer colleagues a degree of freedom of choice as to what projects they pursue, for example, and to allow these internal “market forces” to allow resources to follow these choices; to devolve decision-making as far down the line and as close to the customer as possible.
