Name

member server

Synopsis

A server on a network that is not a domain controller.

Description

Member servers are computers that are running Windows 2000 Server and that do not contain a copy of Active Directory. Member servers therefore cannot authenticate users for network logon or resource access the way domain controllers can. Member servers are generally used instead as dedicated file, print, or application servers.

By default, when Windows 2000 Server is installed on a machine, the result is a member server. Member servers can belong to either a workgroup or a domain.
