Description

The first time you start Internet Explorer or Outlook Express on your computer, the Internet Connection Wizard automatically runs. If you select any option other than “I want to set up my Internet connection manually,” the wizard uses your modem to dial a number that connects you with a web site Microsoft has set up to help you find a provider in your area. (I tried this for my area and drew a blank, even through there are dozens of ISPs in my town.)

To configure a manual connection, the wizard helps you to either:

  • Create a dial-up connection using a modem. You need to know your ISP’s dial-in phone number and the username and password your provider has assigned you. You can optionally set up your email account as well if you know the IP addresses or DNS names of your provider’s SMTP and POP/IMAP servers. Once you are finished, your new connection can be found in Network and Dial-up Connections if you need to reconfigure it.

  • Connect through your LAN. Select this option if you are on a corporate network with a dedicated leased-line connection to your ISP, such as a T1 line. In this case you may have to configure proxy server settings if the wizard can’t detect your proxy server (if your network has one).
