Description

HyperTerminal uses a modem to connect to remote computers that support terminal access. Using terminal programs such as HyperTerminal used to be a popular way of transferring files until the Internet took over everything. HyperTerminal is still sometimes useful to administrators because it can be used for connecting to older routers to manage settings through a command-line interface. To use HyperTerminal this way, connect a straight-through serial cable from one of your computer’s COM ports to a serial port on the router. Then create a new HyperTerminal connection for the COM port, and configure the port settings (usually 8N1).

Tip

Telnet is an alternative to HyperTerminal for configuring routers, but only if the router has an IP address preconfigured at the factory. Most modern routers now support web-based administration, which is much easier to learn and use.
