Fax

Synopsis

Configures fax settings for the Fax Service.

To Launch

  • Start Settings Control Panel Fax

  • Command interpreter control fax.cpl

Description

The Windows 2000 Fax Service can send and receive faxes using a fax modem. When you install a fax modem, Windows 2000 detects the modem’s capabilities, installs the Fax Service, and creates a Fax printer in the Printers folder. Simply print to this printer from an application such as Word to send a fax, or use the Fax utility in the Accessories program group.

You use this Control Panel utility to:

  • Specify user information for faxes you send

  • Create and manage your personal cover pages

  • Configure notifications for sent or received faxes

  • Enable manual answer for single-line service

Use the Advanced Options tab to add a new Fax printer or to open Fax Service Management, an MMC console that can be used to:

  • Enable a computer to receive a fax (by default, when the Fax Service is enabled, your machine is configured to send a fax but not to receive a fax)

  • Configure permissions for using a fax device

  • Configure number of rings for receiving and number of retries for sending

  • Specify storage locations for sent and received faxes

Notes

Fax is available on Windows 2000 Server computers only, not Windows 2000 Professional.
