Synopsis

Indexes documents and document properties on your disks.

Description

The Indexing Service runs in the background and extracts index information from documents stored on your hard drives. This information is used to create catalogs that can be used to search all documents on your drives for:

  • Key words or phrases

  • Document properties such as author name or file size

The types of documents that can be automatically indexed include documents created in Microsoft Office 95 or later, text files, web pages, and any other document type for which a filter has been obtained and installed. Filters are software components that allow the Indexing Service to extract index information from specific types of documents. Third-party vendors of document-creation software often provide filters for their document types.

Tip

The Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack includes an Index Server component that is similar to the one included here. When Windows 2000 is installed, the Indexing Service is not started. Do not start the Indexing Service unless you have sufficient hardware resources to support it, specifically:

  • Enough free disk space to contain the catalogs. This is about 15% of the space used by documents stored on NTFS partitions or 30% on FAT partitions.

  • Enough RAM—the more the better.
