Synopsis

Configure automatic standby settings or manually enter standby mode.

Procedures

Use Power Options in the Control Panel to configure the actions or conditions that lead to your computer being placed in standby mode.

Configure Automatic Standby

Start Settings Control Panel Power Options Power Schemes select your default scheme configure interval of inactivity that triggers standby mode

Manually Enter Standby

Start Shutdown Standby

You can also configure your system so that pressing the power button causes it to enter standby mode instead of powering off completely:

Start Settings Control Panel Power Options Advanced select Standby in the “When I press the power button on my computer” list box

Notes

  • Make sure that you save all your work before you enter (or allow your machine to enter) standby mode, since any data stored only in physical memory (RAM) will be lost when standby occurs.

  • You can password protect your computer during standby by:

    Power Options Advanced “Prompt for password when computer goes off standby”

    Note that the same password is used for both standby and hibernation modes.

  • Press the power button to leave standby mode.

  • Standby mode consumes minimal power for the processor and system board, as opposed to powering off which causes your system to consume no power at all. The advantage is that the system can return from standby mode more quickly than rebooting from a powered-off condition.
