Recovery Console

Synopsis

Install the Recovery Console, run the Recovery Console from the Windows 2000 CD, use the Recovery Console to repair a system.

Procedures

The normal procedure is to install the Recovery Console on a computer before you need it. In an emergency, though, you can run the console from the Windows 2000 CD (see later in this article).

Install the Recovery Console

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD.

  2. Open a command prompt, and change the current directory to <CD_drive>\I386.

  3. Type winnt32 /cmdcons.

The Recovery Console is installed on the system partition in \Cmdcons.

Run the Recovery Console from the Windows 2000 CD

If you installed the Recovery Console on a computer but the partition on which it is installed becomes corrupt, you can run the console directly from the Windows 2000 CD. To do this:

  1. Boot the system using the four Windows 2000 boot floppies.

  2. Select the Repair or Recover option.

  3. Select the Recovery Console.

  4. Insert the Windows 2000 CD.

Use the Recovery Console to Repair a System

To repair a system with the Recovery Console, perform the following steps:

  1. Restart the system and when the boot-loader menu appears, select Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console.

  2. Enter the number of the Windows 2000 installation you want to use (use 1 unless you have a multiboot system).

  3. Enter the password for the local Administrator account on the computer.

  4. Type help to see a list of the commands supported by the Recovery Console.

  5. Type command /? to show the syntax for a specific command.
