mandatory user profile

Synopsis

Make a roaming user profile mandatory.

Procedures

If multiple users will be sharing the same roaming profile, you should make that profile mandatory. This will prevent one user from modifying the shared desktop environment to the annoyance of the other users.

Make a Roaming Profile Mandatory

  1. Open the Active Directory Users and Computers console, and expand the console tree to select the organizational unit (OU) where the user’s account resides (by default, this is the Users OU).

  2. Select account Action Properties Profile tab

  3. Change the Profile Path setting from:

                                  \\server_name\shared_folder_name\user_name

    to:

                                  \\server_name\shared_folder_name\user_name.man

    where:

    • server_name is the name of the server where the share for storing roaming profiles is located.

    • shared_folder_name is the name of the share where the roaming profiles will be stored (typically called Profiles).

    • user_name is the user’s logon name (and hence the name of his roaming profile folder as well).

  4. If multiple users share the roaming profile, repeat steps 2 and 3 for each user account.

  5. Click Start Run \\server_name\shared_folder_name to open a window displaying the contents of the shared folder where the roaming profiles are stored.

  6. Rename the user’s roaming-profile folder from user_name to user_name.man.

When the user next logs on, she will be able to make changes to her desktop environment during a session, but when she logs off, these changes are not updated to the profile stored ...
