Synopsis

Display and modify the name of a Windows 2000 computer.

Procedures

Open the System utility in the Control Panel, and then proceed as follows:

Display computer name

See the Network Identification tab. Click Properties → More to see the NetBIOS name.

Modify computer name
Network Identification → Properties → <computer_name> → enter your Administrator credentials

Notes

  • When you change the computer name, you will need to reboot the computer for the change to take effect.

  • When you change the computer name, the NetBIOS name also changes. For example, if ms1.mtit.com is changed to ps3.mtit.com, the NetBIOS name is changed from MS1 to PS3.

  • You cannot change the computer name on a domain controller.
