The infback.sh, oraback.sh, and syback.sh Utilities

These three programs do both cold and hot backups of Informix, Oracle, and Sybase, respectively. They are written in the Bourne shell, which is compatible with every Unix system. These scripts run on nearly every Unix platform because they use GNU’s config.guess. They all have some method of creating a complete list of database instances on a server and then automatically backing up every instance found. All three scripts support these features:

  • Backup to disk or tape

  • Automatic detection of database configuration

  • Backup of databases on filesystems or raw partitions

  • Mail-based success and error notification

These scripts can be found on the CD (CD content is available online at http://examples.oreilly.com/unixbr) and at http://www.backupcentral.com. They are discussed in detail in Part V of this book.
