Summary

“It is the stairs that make the building inaccessible, not the wheelchair.”[12]

There are many cool (carrot) reasons to implement universal design: it’s usually a great engineering problem (drawing on your creativity to solve architectural and design issues), it can increase your market (and make you more money), and it’s the right thing to do. When the carrots fail to inspire, there are still many other reasons (sticks)—from business practicalities to protection against legal liability—that can be used to advocate the universal design approach.

Universal design is innovative. It’s fun. It’s rewarding. So, what are you waiting for?
