The Swiss Army knife is a good metaphor for the way Google develops and deploys its products. It also aptly describes the growing collection of free tools the company makes available that help users with office productivity (Documents), keeping track of meetings and appointments (Calendar), instant messaging (Gmail), image and blogging software and hosting (Blogger), news with automatic alerts (News), and translation (Translate). And more is always on the way, of course.
