Recruiting the best people is good; keeping them is a lot better. This is why Google works so hard to offer its employees more than just financial motivation.

Psychologists who study employee behavior define two types of motivation: external, or extrinsic, and internal, or intrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from within the employee, from the employee's interest in a task, and the satisfaction that comes from doing a job well. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside the employee, essentially from rewards such as bonuses, raises, or changes in responsibilities.
