Migrating from Legacy

SSIS is the successor to Data Transformation Services (DTS). While there are difficulties upgrading, you have options for maintaining your DTS investment. While conceptually SSIS and DTS have many similarities, these similarities are superficial—SSIS and DTS are two completely different products with different underlying architectures, with the former significantly improved in terms of a robust platform for enterprise-level ETL applications.

Microsoft provides several options to help you preserve your DTS investment from SSIS:

Upgrade Advisor

SQL Server 2005 setup lets you run Upgrade Advisor, which analyzes existing databases, and lets you know potential problems when upgrading to SQL Server 2005. The Upgrade Advisor Analysis Wizard analyzes SQL Server components—SQL Server, Analysis Services, Notification Services, Reporting Services, or Data Transformation Services. The analysis report lists issues together with a description and recommendation about how to resolve the issue. It's important to run Upgrade Advisor to prevent DTS packages from becoming inaccessible and other migration problems after installing SQL Server 2005.

Execute DTS 2000 Package Task

Microsoft provides the Execute DTS 2000 Package task to let you use DTS packages in SSIS.
