The tool on the cover of SQL Hacks is a post-hole digger. A post-hole digger is a type of round-point shovel used for digging narrow, deep holes. The clamshell type on the cover is made of two long cutting blades that drive into the ground. When the handles of the tool are spread, the blades close. Then the tool is withdrawn and the handles are closed, dumping the soil. This type of manual post-hole digger usually creates a hole of about four to six inches, at a depth of one to two feet. If the hole is any deeper, the small diameter of the blades prevents the operator from picking up any more soil.
Post-hole diggers are useful for building fences and decks, as well as for planting and gardening. They work best in loose soil because the scoop blades can bend easily if used as a breaking tool. The scissors-like action of the handles has a tendency to pinch a user’s fingers when closed; leather gloves aren’t a bad idea when using this tool.
