Chapter 8. Hardware

Hacks 50–55: Introduction

A Palm device is useful by itself, but depending on your needs, you may want to extend its capabilities with additional hardware. Hardware can make a Palm device better at things it is not naturally good at—entering text, using GPS, and other such applications.

Most Palm devices have now standardized on SD cards, but you can also find Bluetooth accessories. For older devices, you may be able to find accessories on the Web. Hardware hacks on Palm devices have a long tradition going back to some of the earliest Palm devices. These hacks cover a range of devices from the Palm III up through the latest Palm devices. The Handspring Visor was designed to support hardware hacking with the Springboard slot. Schematics and details on how to build modules were readily available from Handspring.

Some of these hacks are more low-level, while others are more about extending the Palm’s capabilities.
