Forcing Your Macintosh to Shut Down

The Macintosh is typically very reliable. However, things can go wrong that may cause your computer to "freeze up" and stop responding. If this happens, you may need to force the computer to shut down. Here are two ways to force your Macintosh to shut down:

  • Hold down the power button for several seconds.

  • Press command-ctrl-power(laptop models only).

Once your Macintosh shuts down, turn it back on again and hope that the problem has gone away. If not, you may need to pay a visit to an Apple store for help.
