The effects that come with iMovie 4 certainly aren’t the only ones available. $25 or $30 can buy you dozens of additional effects like Mosaic, Emboss, X-ray, and so on. At this writing, you can download some free samples from http://www.apple.com/imovie; they come from the collections of companies like EZedia (http://www.ezmedia.com), GeeThree (http://www.geethree.com), and Virtix (http://www.virtix.com).
Among these collections, you’ll find plug-ins that let you create picture-in-picture effects, add thought bubbles to the characters in your footage, simulate rain, smoke, or snow; tweak colors in various ways; and so on.
