Safari Books Online Adds Chapter Downloads to Corporate E-Reference Libraries

Expanded Depth of Functionality Sets New Standard for Industry

SEBASTOPOL, Calif., Sept. 16, 2005 - Safari Books Online, a joint venture between industry-leading technology publishers O'Reilly Media, Inc., and The Pearson Technology Group, today announced the availability of chapter download functionality throughout its corporate e-reference libraries. Safari subscribers search across an e-library of thousands of technical and business books to pinpoint needed information in a matter of seconds. Users can read entire books online, or flip directly to the section they need to solve the problem at hand. Now, using Safari's exclusive chapter download feature, subscribers can view content offline in PDF format.

"Individual subscribers have benefited from the chapter download feature for the past 18 months, since we first introduced the feature in our Safari Bookshelf service," said Sean Devine, president and CEO of Safari. "We are now extending this capability to our corporate clients in order to satisfy their demand for access to targeted content when traveling or working offline."

Safari's e-reference libraries are in a league of their own when compared to a traditional e-book concept. A programmer, for example, can search across more than 3000 books from O'Reilly, Addison-Wesley, Microsoft Press and other leading publishers simultaneously to pinpoint exactly the chapter or sample code needed.

Safari's advanced search algorithm ranks search terms, such as "javabeans" or "Linux," in context, helping users quickly zero in on the most useful section and chapter. Subscribers have access to every page in every book in the Safari technical library. They can search the entire library simultaneously, flip to the specific section needed, and download chapters to read offline.

Enterprise-level products include Safari Tech Books Online, Safari HelpDesk Online, Safari Business Books Online, and Safari Enterprise Library.
